The Tsunami Caused by the 30 October 2020 Samos (Aegean Sea) Mw7.0 Earthquake: Hydrodynamic Features, Source Properties and Impact Assessment from Post-Event Field Survey and Video Records

The tsunami generated by the offshore Samos Island earthquake (Mw = 7.0, 30 October 2020) is largest in Aegean Sea since 1956 CE. Our study was based on field surveys, video records, eyewitness accounts and far-field mareograms. recession leading motion most sites implying wave generation from seismic dislocation. At an epicentral distance of ~12 km (site K4, north Samos), sea recession, followed extreme height (h~3.35 m), occurred 2? 4? after earthquake, respectively. In main moved obliquely to coast. These features may reflect coupling broadside with landslide at K4. on-shelf edge-wave might be alternative. A few kilometers a ~1 m measured several sites, except Vathy bay (east, h 2 m) Karlovasi port (west, 1.80 where amplified. bay, two inundations arrived time difference ~19?, second being strongest. Karlovasi, one inundation occurred. both towns western Turkey, material damage caused > 1 m. other islands, ? reported. 0.5 values follow power-law decay away source. We calculated magnitude Mt~7.0, source area 1960 km2 displacement amplitude co-seismic 15–25 cm coastal uplift decreased run-up. early warning message perhaps contributed decrease impact.
